Troubleshooting domains

It stays on "Awaiting DNS"

  • Check the record from outside, rather than in your provider's interface:

    Terminal
    dig +short CNAME www.example.com

It should print the value the dashboard shows. Nothing printed means the record isn't published yet, or was created under another name.

  • The name is doubled. Many providers append your domain to the name: enter www, not www.example.com, or you get www.example.com.example.com.

  • An older record is in the way. An A, AAAA or other CNAME record on the same name takes precedence; remove it.

  • DNS takes time. Most changes are visible within minutes, some take hours. Choose Refresh to check again.

It shows "Invalid configuration"

The dashboard lists what verification found. Fix those records, then choose Refresh. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, make sure the record is DNS only, not proxied.

"That hostname is already in use"

A hostname belongs to one project across Hiraiship. If it's yours, remove it from the other project first. If it isn't, contact support.

The apex domain can't be added at my provider

Your provider doesn't support ALIAS records. Serve the site from www, and either move your DNS to a provider that supports ALIAS, ANAME or CNAME flattening, or redirect the apex to www with your registrar's forwarding feature.

It's valid, but shows the wrong site

Check the domain's environment on the project's Domains page, and that this environment has the deployment you expect.

The site shows a Hiraiship status page

"Site paused", "Waking up…", "Monthly limit reached" and "Spending limit reached" come from your plan, not from the domain. See Pausing & hibernation and Suspensions.
